Eustress: Help Carey Celebrate JUDGMENT’S Release
Hi Friends!
I hope you are all having a wonderful fall! This is a special day for me, and I love celebrating it with you. I’m definitely eustressing today. Have you guys heard this term? I first learned about eustress way back when, in graduate school, but to simplify I’ll just use this definition from Wikipedia –which is right on the money:
“Eustress occurs when the gap between what one has and what one wants is slightly pushed, but not overwhelmed. The goal is not too far out of reach but is still slightly more than one can handle. This fosters challenge and motivation since the goal is in sight. The function of challenge is to motivate a person toward improvement and a goal.”
So Eustress, while uncomfortable, is really a positive thing. The source of my “good stress” today is the release of JUDGMENT, the first book in my Cassidy and Spenser Thrillers series, but more about that later.
First, I want to thank you all for helping to make CONFESSION a bestseller. I’ve loved being part of Harper Collins/Witness Impulse’s first year. And because of readers like you, CONFESSION spent six weeks in the top 100 Nook Books over at Barnes and Noble (reaching a best rank of #12 in the overall Nook store) as well as appearing on the Amazon bestseller lists in both Suspense and Romantic Suspense.
So I truly want to thank you, and I have a special gift for one lucky commenter. I wish I could give the gift to each one of you. But I’ll have to settle for one randomly drawn commenter.

Kiss and Thrill 
HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!!! I finished reading an advance copy of JUDGMENT yesterday and absolutely LOVED it! Excellent thriller plot but the stand-out is the chemistry and just plain fun of the Cassidy/Spense crime-fighting duo. So witty and sexy. Their dialogue is so engaging. Can’t wait to see them again in your next book! Great job Carey!!!!

I can’t wait to read this one Carey! I’m sure it’ll be another bestseller. I feel like I operate in a constant state of eustress. 😉 I’m always pushing my comfort zone and trying new things that scare me a little.
Probably my most memorable eustress moment (besides maybe self-pubbing Blind Fury) was giving a speech at my graduate school’s graduation ceremony. I used to just blow through speeches (like class presentations) without any control and not even remember them afterwards. But thanks to 3 years of Toastmasters and 2 more years of grad school presentations, this time I was up in front of several hundred people, and I was super nervous, but also totally in the moment and aware. It was an incredible feeling.

Gosh, Gwen, which program was that? does it mean you were valedictorian? What a great story.
That was at Cal Poly, Diana. I was an Industrial & Technical Studies major (similar to Industrial or Mfg Engineering but in the B school). I was one of a dozen or so who qualified for valedictorian, but I was the only one who volunteered to speak for the I&TS major. I loved grad school, and found my motivation even higher than undergrad, since I was paying my own way and learning something I enjoyed. 😉
Congratulations on the new book, Carey! I absolutely loved it. I literally sat up all night and could not put it down.
Hmm, I never heard this term and can name a ton of times I’ve been Eustressed. It sort of sounds like EuThyroid. LOL. Does the root means normal? As in normal / good stress?
Okay, back to the question — I suppose being in the conservatory, having a repertoire of at least seven pieces in top shape for each instrument at all times, while learning new concertos for competitions, certainly fell into that category (I played piano and violin). I knew I was capable — especially since my teacher told me I was (isn’t it funny how much you can do when someone else tells you it’s possible?) but it took three to four hours of practice a day.
I know that is one of the reasons I can write books today. Learning to see things through, knowing how to break massive jobs down step-by-step is the difference between Eustress and complete meltdown.

I have heard of eustress and have had moments throughout my life. The last one I had was last year when I was going to Italy but I had challenges at home. I didn’t want to go and leave my family but because of nonreturnable tickets I went and had an amazing time.

Hmm… eustress moments (am I the only one who thinks it sounds like estrus?) probably all revolve around writing, that giddy joy when a scene comes together, the fear that the plot threads won’t connect in a satisfying way. And then, when satisfaction is achieved and the book is everything I want it to be, the anticipation just before a book goes live: fear people will hate it, and the hope people will love it.

Eustress?! Why, impulsively deciding to buy a new home in a new state in June, packing, moving, (having wallet stolen on the drive out and all the details that entails.) Earning a land speed record for unpacking, arranging furniture and hanging art. Then successfully hosting a party.
P.S.: It’d help my eustress if I didn’t lose my way every time I drive out of the gates of this community.
